28ft x 9ft Wide Tiny House Trailer Foundation: Built for Fast & Easy Building
At Tiny House Basics, our mission is to make your tiny house build as smoothly and efficiently as possible, and that starts with the proper foundation. In this post, we’re spotlighting one of the many popular trailer sizes. Today, it’s the 28ft x 9ft wide, triple-axle Tiny House Trailer Foundation, custom-built for maximum practicality and ease of construction.
Whether you’re new to the tiny house world or starting your build soon, this trailer showcases many things we’ve learned from building thousands of custom Tiny House Trailer foundations over the years.
📐 Built for Efficiency & Comfort
This 28ft x 9ft trailer features a standard deck height of 26 inches with exposed fenders. While our standard width is 8.5ft, many of our customers opt for wider builds—like this one at 9ft—to gain more usable interior space and reduce that classic “narrow hallway” feel common in smaller footprints.
And yes, anything over 8.5ft requires a wide load permit, but don’t stress—we’ve outlined everything you need to know in our blog post about wide load permits.
🔩 Strength Where It Matters
Let’s talk structure. This Tiny House Trailer Foundation is built with:
- 5″ x 2″ flush crossmembers, placed 16” on center, mimicking traditional residential floor framing for more straightforward and stronger subfloor installation.
- Square fenders with gusseted supports—sturdy enough to frame around, but still best treated like window openings (add headers!).
- Brakes on all axles for maximum stopping power and safety.
- Threaded anchor rods strategically placed at 10” from corners, before/after fenders, and every 4ft across the trailer. Want a custom layout? We can do that too—even rods on top or inside the fenders if needed.
🔧 Custom is Standard
Every trailer we build is made to order. You pick the length, width, axle capacity, anchor rod layout, fender type, tongue length—everything. This 28ft model features a 4ft standard tongue with extra structural support beneath both the tongue and main deck.
We’ve seen a huge rise in demand for wider and longer trailers. Today, 30ft x 10ft is one of our most requested Tiny House Trailer Foundation sizes, along with 36ft and 40ft models in both 10ft and 12ft widths. That little bit of extra space makes a massive difference in livability and layout options.
🛏 When to Consider a Deckover
If you’re not planning on sleeping lofts, or you’re working with a wider trailer (especially 11ft or 12ft), you may want to consider a deckover style trailer. This lifts the floor over the wheels to eliminate fender intrusion and give you total freedom when placing doors, windows, or cabinetry. The deck height is about 36 inches—ideal for single-level tiny homes or studio layouts.
We go deeper into this in our deckover trailer video series, so be sure to check that out too.
🏠 Why Size Matters
Back when we started building tiny house trailers over a decade ago, 28ft was considered large. Now, as lifestyles shift and tiny house living becomes more common, we’ve found that people want just a bit more space for comfort and functionality.
From our own experience living full-time in a tiny house for 11 years, we can say without a doubt: a little extra space goes a long way.
